Attack and Vandalism on Hindu Homes in Rangpur: 5 Arrested, Sent to 2-Day Remand*

On Thursday (July 31), the Rangpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-Gangachara, presided over by Judge Krishna Kamal Roy, granted a two-day remand for five youths arrested in connection with an attack and vandalism on Hindu homes in Aladadpur, Gangachara, Rangpur.

The accused were produced before the court on Thursday. The court’s decision came after a plea by the investigating officer, Gangachara Police Station OC Al Emran, who initially sought a seven-day remand for each. The court, however, approved a two-day remand for interrogation.

According to Rangpur Court Inspector Aminul Islam, the incident stemmed from objectionable comments and images posted on social media about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Islam, and the Quran, which led to the vandalism in the Chhoy Ani Balapara Hindu community. The court ordered the two-day remand to interrogate the five arrested individuals. On Wednesday, when the accused were first brought to court, their bail was rejected, and the remand hearing was scheduled for Thursday. Earlier, on Tuesday, a local resident, Rabindranath Roy, filed a case against 1,200 unidentified individuals. The incident was triggered on Saturday (July 26) when a youth from the Hindu community, Ranjan Roy, posted offensive comments and images about Islam, the Quran, and the Prophet on social media, sparking tension in the area. The same night, police arrested Ranjan Roy. Following this, a group of agitated people from a neighboring upazila marched to the area and carried out the attack and vandalism, damaging 22 houses belonging to 12 families. The upazila administration later repaired the damaged houses. While some residents had fled in fear, all have now returned to their homes. Rangpur Police Superintendent Abu Saim stated, “We have identified the perpetrators involved in the attack through footage and still images. Operations are ongoing, and we are also searching for the mastermind behind this incident. No innocent person will be arrested.”
