Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, stated, “In the next five to six days, we will understand where we are heading. However, whatever happens, there will be no delay in the election. The Chief Adviser is firm on this stance. With public participation, there will be no obstacles to a fair election.”
He made these remarks during a dialogue with journalists organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) on Thursday (July 31).
Shafiqul Alam noted that while the next five to six days may be challenging for the government, there is no security risk in the country. Law enforcement agencies are vigilant in this regard. He added, “If the people of the country remain united, one or two individuals on the streets cannot destabilize the nation.”
Expressing hope for a peaceful election, the Press Secretary said, “Under the interim government, this election will be the fairest one yet. Despite visible conflicts among some political parties, these will not impact the fairness of the election. This election will be free from violence.”
Commenting on the economy, he said the government has recovered the country from a risky economic situation. “Inflation is decreasing, reserves are increasing, and the law and order situation is now stable. Police morale is gradually improving.”
Shafiqul Alam further stated that the previous government had “mortgaged” the country’s foreign policy to foreign powers. The current government, however, is working to maintain friendly relations with all countries, including India.
Highlighting media freedom, the Press Secretary said, “The media is operating freely under this government. No one faces obstacles while practicing journalism, and no restrictions are imposed on criticizing the government. If anyone faces issues, they can inform me.”
On media facilities, he remarked, “Media outlets that cannot pay their employees’ salaries should be shut down. Such outlets often spread misinformation and disinformation.”
Addressing extortion, Shafiqul Alam emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy. “If evidence is found, action will be taken against anyone involved. It is unfortunate that, even 54 years after independence, there is no transparency in political party fundraising.”
