In a tragic incident at a private clinic in Tangail, a child died following a tonsillectomy. The doctor and hospital staff reportedly fled after the incident.
The incident occurred on Friday (July 25) afternoon at Mirzapur Modern Hospital and Diagnostic Center. The deceased, Tasrifa Akter (9), was the daughter of Parvez Mia from Pachutia village in Delduar Upazila.
Parvez Mia, the father of the deceased, who works as a mechanic in a factory in Dhaka’s export area, recounted the events. He said, “On Friday morning, I brought my wife, Poly Akter, and daughter Tasrifa to Mirzapur Modern Hospital and Diagnostic Center for her tonsil treatment. After examinations, the doctors admitted her for a tonsillectomy. In the afternoon, she was taken to the operating room. Dr. Masum Billah, an ENT specialist, performed the surgery. After the procedure, Tasrifa was moved to a bed in an unconscious state.”
According to Parvez, the doctor initially claimed the surgery was successful. However, shortly afterward, Tasrifa began to convulse. Parvez called for the nurses and doctors, but a nurse dismissed the concern, stating that it’s normal for tonsillectomy patients to experience such symptoms. Soon after, Tasrifa’s condition deteriorated further, and she became unresponsive. The clinic staff then referred her to Kumudini Hospital.
Doctors at Kumudini Hospital confirmed that Tasrifa had passed away. When Parvez and his wife, Poly Begum, returned to the clinic with their daughter’s body and began protesting, alleging medical negligence, Dr. Md. Masum Billah, the nurses, and the clinic’s management fled the scene.
When contacted, Dr. Md. Masum Billah claimed, “The surgery was successful. The patient’s death could be due to an anesthesia error.” However, the anesthesiologist, Dr. Saif Abdullah, countered, “If there was an error in anesthesia, the patient would not have regained consciousness. But the patient regained consciousness and even spoke after the surgery.”
Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Rashedul Islam said, “After receiving news of the child’s death, police were sent to the scene. However, neither the victim’s family nor the body was found at the location. The family had quickly taken the body to their home in Delduar.”
He added, “We have sent a message to the victim’s family. Legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is received.”
