Child Murdered in Savar Over Drug Dispute; Suspect Arrested


Dhaka, July 13, 2025: A 12-year-old child was brutally murdered in Savar, Dhaka, following a dispute over sharing marijuana during consumption, according to the confession of the arrested suspect, Mo. Rabbani Mollah, to the police.

Mo. Rabbani Mollah (18), a resident of Ram Bari in Manda upazila, Naogaon, and a mason’s assistant, was arrested in connection with the murder. The police have recovered the knife used in the crime. According to the case filed, the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 4 PM when the child went out to play near his home in Ashulia. He did not return home. The following day, an unidentified individual called the child’s father from an unknown number, demanding ransom and threatening to kill the boy if the money was not paid. Police reported that despite the age difference, the victim and Rabbani shared a friendly relationship. Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime, Operations, and Traffic) Arafatul Islam stated that Rabbani was arrested on Saturday night following operations in various locations in Ashulia. Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Md. Shahinur Kabir explained, “The child was killed with a knife during a dispute over sharing marijuana while consuming it.” The child’s father recounted that his son was playing downstairs on Thursday afternoon and went missing thereafter. He informed Ashulia Police Station the next morning. That same morning, an unknown caller demanded Tk 30,000 initially, later escalating the demand to Tk 50 lakh. The father further stated that he believes Rabbani could not have committed the crime alone and demanded justice for all those involved in the incident. -
