Shahbag’s ‘Prajnma Chattar’ Structure Being Demolished

The structure popularly known as ‘Prajnma Chattar’ at Shahbag intersection in the capital is being demolished. The demolition work began on Saturday night.

As of Sunday (July 13), the demolition process has not been fully completed. Workers involved in the task stated that the demolition is expected to be finalized by tonight.

A video of the structure being demolished with an excavator went viral on social media on Saturday night. Although it was initially unclear who was carrying out the demolition, it was later confirmed that the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is demolishing the structure under the directive of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. According to DSCC officials, the ministry instructed the demolition of the structure at Shahbag intersection, and a new structure will be built in its place. It is known that in 2008, former Awami League MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon obtained permission from the city corporation to construct the structure. Initially, the site was allocated for commercial purposes, specifically for advertising, and the structure was built at his own expense. After its construction, the digital screen installed at the site caused disturbances due to excessive noise and bright lights, leading to complaints from the University of Dhaka authorities and the Shahbag Museum authorities, who requested its removal. However, Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon, leveraging his influence, did not comply with the request.
Subsequently, the city corporation removed the digital screen. Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon then filed a lawsuit in court seeking compensation. The structure had remained largely abandoned for several years before its demolition. The Ministry of Housing and Public Works has now decided to demolish it and build a ‘July Monument’ in its place.
