Chinese Ambassador: Communication with BNP, Jamaat Blocked for Past 10 Years

Dhaka, July 29, 2025 – China’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, revealed that during the last 10 years under the previous government, China faced obstacles in communicating with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami. He made these remarks at the ‘DICAB Talk’ event held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday, organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DICAB).

When questioned about recent visits by delegations from BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami to China, Ambassador Yao stated, “Frankly speaking, over the past 10 years, barriers were created in communicating with BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. Now, the time has come, and we have taken steps to re-establish contact.” He highlighted China’s interest in resuming exchange visits and restoring communication with these parties.

On how the previous Awami League government obstructed engagement with various political parties, Yao Wen said, “I believe the journalists present here understand the situation over the past few years. I don’t wish to specify details. You know the circumstances I faced.” Last month, a high-level BNP delegation led by General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited China at the invitation of the Communist Party of China. Similarly, this month, a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation led by its Ameer, Shafiqur Rahman, also visited China. The event was presided over by DICAB President AKM Moinuddin, with a welcome address by General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun.
