Dhaka, July 22, 2025: At least 50 people were injured in a clash between students and law enforcement forces in front of the Secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon. The incident was confirmed by Inspector Faruk Hossain, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The confrontation erupted as students protested the crash of an Air Force fighter jet at Milestone School and College in Uttara and expressed anger over the decision regarding the HSC examination schedule announced at 3 a.m. The students gathered in front of the Secretariat, demanding the resignation of the Education Adviser. At one point, when students attempted to enter the Secretariat by breaking the gate, law enforcement responded with baton charges and tear gas.
According to some Secretariat officials and employees, the students entered the premises and vandalized vehicles, as well as caused damage in front of the Home and LGRD Ministries. However, the students denied these allegations, claiming they were instructed to go to the Secretariat to voice their demands. They stated that gate number one was opened for them, and in the ensuing tense situation, they damaged a vehicle.
Nazmus Sakib, a student from Lalbag Model College, said, “Just like during the Hasina government, the police beat students today in the same way. They hit me with the butt of a gun and crushed my leg.”
Saimun, a student from Dhaka Residential Model College, alleged, “The police lured students inside the Secretariat gate and then baton-charged them. Even Secretariat employees attacked the students. Many students were injured.”
Asif, a student from Imperial College, said, “The students were betrayed. They were called for discussions but were brutally beaten by the police.”
The injured were rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
