Four Beaten on Suspicion of Cattle Theft in Gazipur, One Dead

In Gazipur, a mob attacked four individuals suspected of cattle theft, resulting in the death of one youth on the spot. The three others, seriously injured, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in Ramchandrapur village, Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur.

The deceased, identified as Md. Shanto Islam (21), was a resident of Baluchar in Madhabdi upazila, Narsingdi. The injured individuals are Rifat (19) from Barhara (Badda) area, Rubel (28) from Bhatira area, and Abdullah (27) from Bandakhola area, all in Kaliakair.

According to police and locals, around 3:45 AM, a group of thieves broke into the cattle shed of Shamsuddin Molla in Ramchandrapur village. Shamsuddin, who was sleeping in an adjacent room, woke up to noises and spotted the intruders. He raised an alarm through the mosque’s loudspeaker and, with the help of villagers, chased the suspects. The mob caught four individuals and beat them severely, leading to Shanto’s death at the scene. Police arrived around 7:30 AM, took the three surviving suspects into custody, and sent them to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex by 9:30 AM. After receiving initial treatment, the injured were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to their critical condition. The body of the deceased was sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Farmer Shamsuddin Molla said, “A few days ago, one of my cows was stolen. Since then, I’ve been keeping watch at night. When the thieves entered this morning, I shouted for help, and the villagers caught four of them. The angry mob then beat them.” Dr. Shahidul Islam from Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex stated, “Police brought four individuals to the hospital around 9:30 AM. One was already dead on arrival. The other three, in critical condition, were given primary treatment and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.” Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Alauddin confirmed, “Locals beat four individuals suspected of cattle theft, resulting in one death. Legal action is underway regarding this incident.”
