The deceased have been identified as Sohag Mia (23) and Jhuma Akter (19). Sohag, son of Abdul Kuddus from Chaklengara village, and Jhuma, daughter of Rahim Uddin from Kurulia village, were married about three years ago and have a two-year-old daughter. Police suspect the couple died between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM on Sunday night.
According to local residents, police, and family sources, Sohag had been living with his wife at her father’s house in Kurulia since their marriage. He worked as a mason. The couple reportedly had ongoing marital disputes. On Saturday night around 9:00 PM, they had an argument, which was later resolved by Sohag’s father-in-law, Abdul Kuddus. Afterward, Sohag and Jhuma went to sleep with their daughter in a separate room. Around 2:00 AM, when their daughter woke up crying and wanted to go to her mother, Kuddus discovered the couple’s bodies hanging separately from the ceiling beam. He informed neighbors, who then contacted the police. The police arrived on Sunday morning and recovered the bodies.
Durgapur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Mahmudul Hasan, speaking from the scene at around 10:00 AM on Sunday, stated, “Based on conversations with locals, it appears the incident may have stemmed from marital discord. The police are investigating the matter. The bodies have been prepared for autopsy and will be sent to the morgue at Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital. Initial findings suggest it could be a case of suicide, but a final conclusion will be made after receiving the autopsy report.”
