In a significant achievement, 80 talented Bangladeshi students have been awarded the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) for the 2025-26 academic year. These students will pursue higher education at undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels in China’s top-ranking universities, fully funded by the Chinese government. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, monthly stipends, health insurance, and travel expenses, ensuring comprehensive support for the recipients.
The Chinese Government Scholarship program has been a gateway for Bangladeshi students to access higher education in China for over four decades. Since its inception in 1981, approximately 4,500 Bangladeshi students have benefited from this initiative, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions in research, technology, and education both in Bangladesh and globally.
China’s high-quality education system, research-oriented approach, and technologically advanced campuses have increasingly attracted Bangladeshi students. Beyond academics, the scholarship fosters cultural exchange and strengthens bilateral ties between Bangladesh and China. With Chinese universities climbing global rankings, China has become a preferred destination for international students seeking world-class education.
According to education experts, China’s higher education system is now globally competitive, emphasizing research and technology-driven learning. The Chinese Government offers various scholarships annually to international students, with the CGS being one of the most prestigious, managed by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) and overseen by Chinese embassies worldwide.
This year, out of numerous applicants from Bangladesh, 80 students were selected, including 18 for undergraduate programs, 40 for postgraduate studies, 21 for PhD programs, and one as a senior scholar. The scholarship provides monthly stipends of 2,500 Yuan for undergraduates, 3,000 Yuan for postgraduates, and 3,500 Yuan for PhD students, along with full coverage of tuition, accommodation, health insurance, and travel expenses.
Mr. Sun, an official at the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, emphasized that the CGS program has deepened mutual understanding and friendship between the two nations. He noted that many former scholars are now excelling in fields like science and contributing to the development of Bangladesh-China relations. Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Mr. Sun expressed hope that these scholars will continue to strengthen the enduring friendship between the two countries.
The application process for the CGS typically begins in December each year, with preliminary results announced in February. Final selections are made between May and July after interviews and evaluations. Interested students apply online through the CSC website.
The selected students will study at renowned Chinese institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University, across disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, and Chinese language studies.
A student selected for Peking University expressed excitement, stating, “I am thrilled and proud. This opportunity opens new possibilities for my future.”
Jannatul Arif, President of the Bangladesh-China Youth Student Association (BCYSA), described the scholarship as a “blessing” for Bangladeshi students, enabling access to China’s advanced education and research facilities at no cost. She highlighted its role in fostering both personal growth and stronger bilateral ties.
The selected students have already received admission letters and necessary documents and are set to depart for China in the first week of September 2025.
The Chinese Government Scholarship, also known as the CGS Scholarship, is China’s most prestigious government-funded program. Additionally, Bangladeshi students can access other Chinese scholarships, including provincial government scholarships, municipal scholarships, university-specific scholarships, Confucius Institute scholarships, and vocational education scholarships.
This scholarship program continues to fuel growing interest among Bangladeshi students in pursuing higher education in China, further solidifying educational and cultural ties between the two nations.
