Police have arrested a man in connection with the deaths of five individuals due to the consumption of homemade liquor in Khulna. The suspect, identified as Sheikh Moslem Ali (78), a homeopathic practitioner, was detained late Saturday night (July 19) from his residence in Malek Sarak Road, Rayermahal area.
The deceased have been identified as Babu (50), son of Abdur Rab from Boyra Sherer Bazar Mor; Sabu (60), son of Abdus Samad from Boyra Madhyapara; Gautam Kumar Bishwas (47) from Boyra Junction Road; Azibor (59) from Sonadanga Rayermahal; and Tota (60) from Boyra Public College area.
According to Mohammad Abu Tarek, Deputy Commissioner (South) of Khulna Metropolitan Police, Moslem Ali was producing homemade liquor using a mixture of alcohol, sleeping pills, and lime water. Several individuals consumed the liquor at a house in Purba Bil Pabla Madina Nagar under Arangghata police station and subsequently fell ill. They were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital and other facilities for treatment.
One person died on Friday night, followed by four others on Saturday. Following a police operation, Moslem Ali was arrested on Saturday night in connection with the incident.
