Bangladesh national cricket team player Taskin Ahmed has dismissed allegations of assaulting a childhood friend as "false" and urged the public not to be misled by rumors. Speaking to over the phone, Taskin clarified, “This is a lie. I haven’t assaulted anyone. Those who filed a complaint against me at the police station are now apologizing to me.”
The controversy stems from a General Diary (GD) filed late Sunday night at Mirpur Model Police Station by Sifatur Rahman Sourav, who claimed to be a childhood friend of Taskin. Sourav alleged that Taskin called him over the phone, assaulted him, and issued threats. When contacted, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Model Police Station, Sajjad Roman, confirmed to *Prothom Alo*, “A written complaint has been lodged against Taskin. We are investigating to verify the authenticity of the allegations.”
Taskin, however, provided a different account of the incident. He explained, “I didn’t assault anyone. Yesterday evening, a scuffle broke out between two of our mutual friends, Rasir and Sourav. Upon hearing about it, I requested the OC of Mohammadpur Police Station to look into the matter. When the OC began investigating, Sourav and his group, out of anger, filed a GD against me at Mirpur Model Police Station late last night.”
Taskin further claimed that the complainants are now embarrassed about their actions. “I have known all of them since childhood. I asked Sourav why he filed a complaint against me when I wasn’t even present at the scene. He admitted that he acted emotionally and has apologized to me. He has also withdrawn the complaint,” Taskin told.
According to sources, Sourav verbally informed Mirpur Model Police Station today that he wishes to withdraw the complaint. However, the police advised him that since the complaint was filed in writing, its withdrawal must also be submitted in writing, requiring him to visit the station in person.
Taskin expressed discomfort over the situation, calling it embarrassing and damaging to his reputation. “This issue has been blown out of proportion since this morning, and I’m tired. This should end here. But if the police want to investigate whether I was actually involved, they are welcome to do so,” he said.
Taskin labeled the allegations as “false, fabricated, and motivated,” adding, “I hope you will stand by the truth, as the truth never becomes a lie.”
Addressing a related statement by his father that appeared in the media, Taskin clarified, “Sourav’s aunt called my father, and in the conversation, he might have said something about all our friends. Some people are misrepresenting his words out of context, which is unfair.”
In a Facebook post this afternoon, Taskin reiterated his stance, urging people not to believe rumors. He wrote, “I request everyone not to be misled by rumors. A lot is being said about an incident where I allegedly assaulted a childhood friend. Please don’t believe such rumors or mislead others. This is disrespectful to me, my family, and my friend. We have spoken, and this issue shouldn’t have escalated to this level. The reality is different from what’s being portrayed.”
