Culvert Collapses Within a Week Due to Use of Bamboo and Wood Instead of Steel Rods

In Boglabazar Union of Doarabazar, Sunamganj, a culvert constructed using bamboo and wood instead of steel rods collapsed within a week of its completion. As a result, transportation on this vital road has come to a complete halt, causing severe inconvenience to local residents and commuters.

According to local sources, the culvert was built in Kanthalbari village under the supervision of local Union Parishad (UP) member Jamil Ahmed, with a budget of approximately 2 lakh taka funded by the Boglabazar Union Parishad. However, allegations have surfaced that substandard materials were used in the construction. The culvert collapsed quickly due to the use of bamboo and wood in place of sufficient steel rods.

Locals have accused the authorities of misusing the allocated funds for the project. They claim that irregularities and corruption in the construction process have led to the rapid deterioration of this important public pathway.

A local resident, Nuruzzaman, stated, “During the construction, we objected to the use of bamboo and wood, but our concerns were ignored. They continued the work as they pleased.” Zahirul Haque Sani, joint convener of Doarabazar Upazila Chhatra Dal and a local resident, remarked, “The culvert in Kanthalbari, built with bamboo and wood, collapsed within a few days. It is deeply disappointing to witness such irregularities and corruption in the country even after the fall of authoritarian rule.” Multiple attempts to contact UP member Jamil Ahmed for comments on the issue were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls. In a message on social media, Boglabazar Union Parishad Chairman Milan Khan expressed regret, stating, “The culvert was recently constructed. It collapsed due to the movement of heavy vehicles.” Doarabazar Upazila Executive Officer Arup Ratan Singh assured that the matter would be investigated, and necessary actions would be taken.
