In Syria’s southern Sweida province, the death toll from communal violence between Druze militia fighters and Sunni Bedouin tribes has surged to 940, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported on Saturday. Despite the escalating casualties, the Syrian government has announced a ceasefire in Sweida to halt the sectarian conflict. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated, “Among the deceased, 326 are Druze fighters, and 262 are Druze civilians, of whom 182 were directly killed by members of Syria’s defense and interior ministries.” Additionally, the clashes have claimed the lives of at least 312 Syrian security forces members and 21 Sunni Bedouins. The observatory also reported that 15 Syrian army soldiers were killed in Israeli military strikes supporting the Druze community. The United States mediated a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Syrian government to end the ongoing communal violence in Sweida. This announcement comes amid reports of the rising death toll. Earlier, on Wednesday, Israel launched a major attack in central Damascus, targeting the Syrian army’s headquarters. US envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, confirmed that Syrian leader Ahmed al-Shara and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the ceasefire, facilitated by the US. Barrack, the US Ambassador to Ankara, noted that Turkey, a key ally of al-Shara, and neighboring Jordan have also endorsed the agreement.
