Dhaka Drenched in Asharh Rain, Commuters Face Hardships

Following a day of continuous rain, Dhaka has been experiencing intermittent showers since early morning today. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department had previously forecasted an increase in rainfall towards the end of Asharh, and as predicted, the capital’s roads and alleys have been inundated due to persistent rain starting from dawn.

According to the Meteorological Department, Dhaka recorded 45 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours, classified as ‘heavy rainfall.’ The forecast indicates that the sky may remain cloudy to overcast, with rainfall likely to continue today. On Wednesday (July 9), the continuous rain since dawn has caused significant inconvenience for working people, particularly office-goers, who are facing extreme difficulties. Many are waiting on the streets for public transport, some with umbrellas, while others are completely drenched. Rubina Sultana, an employee at a private organization in Rampura, said, “My office is in Paltan, but due to the rain, every bus is overcrowded. Despite holding an umbrella, I couldn’t board a bus even after waiting for a long time. The relentless rain has left me soaked despite the umbrella. Thousands of office-goers are suffering immensely due to the rain.” Garment worker Ruhul Amin, speaking at Mohakhali crossing, expressed frustration, saying, “Whenever it rains a little, Dhaka city gets flooded. The roads are waterlogged, there’s no space on buses, and rickshaw or CNG fares are sky-high. Being late to work means a salary cut. All in all, the day has started terribly.”
The Meteorological Department reported that at 6 AM today, Dhaka’s temperature was 25 degrees Celsius, with humidity at 98%. Winds blowing from the southeast or south at 10-15 km per hour are expected, and the daytime temperature is likely to remain largely unchanged.
