Election Commission Cancels Registration of 96 Local Election Observer Organizations Registered During Awami League Government

On Thursday (July 17), Md. Shariful Alam, Director of Public Relations at the Election Commission (EC), announced that the registration of 96 local election observer organizations, previously registered under the Awami League government, has been permanently canceled.

He stated, "A new policy has been issued, and the previous one has been revoked. As a result, the registration of all observer organizations registered under the old policy has been canceled." It is known that among these organizations are controversial ones such as Janipop and the SAARC Human Rights Foundation.
Previously, despite many organizations lacking the qualifications to monitor elections, the commission led by Kazi Habibul Awal granted them registration based on partisan considerations. Consequently, these observer organizations certified the controversial 12th national parliamentary election, along with other local elections, as ‘satisfactory.’
