Dhaka, July 27, 2025: A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day remand for Abdur Razzak, a leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s Private University Coordinating Committee, along with three others, in connection with an extortion case. The decision was made by the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Sunday following a police application.
The other three individuals sent to remand are Sakdaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, and Ibrahim Hossain. They were arrested for allegedly extorting money from the residence of former Member of Parliament Shammi Ahmed in the Gulshan area of the capital.
According to the Gulshan police, on July 17, Abdur Razzak (also known as Riyad) and Kazi Gourab Apu visited Shammi Ahmed’s residence, demanding 50 lakh taka in extortion money. They allegedly threatened to have her arrested if the amount was not paid. Shammi Ahmed’s husband reportedly paid 10 lakh taka to the accused. On Saturday, Abdur Razzak and his associates returned to the residence to demand more money, leading to their arrest by the police.
Police informed the court that the accused, posing as coordinators, have been intimidating people and extorting money. They emphasized that a remand was necessary to uncover the details of the case. Initially, the police sought a 10-day remand, but after hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a seven-day remand for four of the accused. The fifth individual, being a minor, was sent to the Tongi Juvenile Development Center.
