In Meherpur’s Gangni, a man posing as a journalist was beaten by locals for alleged extortion. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Bashbaria village. The individual, identified as Abdur Rauf, a resident of Mallikpara in Meherpur municipality, was subsequently handed over to the police.
According to several eyewitnesses, Abdur Rauf had been demanding Tk 20,000 from a local rural doctor, Abdul Mabud. Rauf threatened to publish a report against Mabud in a local newspaper if the money was not paid. After making repeated demands over the phone, Rauf visited Bashbaria on Tuesday afternoon to collect the money, prompting locals to beat him. Army personnel from a nearby camp rescued Rauf and took him into custody.
Abdul Mabud told Prothom Alo that Rauf had been extorting him for months, threatening detention by police, army, or RAB if he did not comply. Rauf claimed over the phone that he had to “manage” everyone with money and that Mabud would not be allowed to practice medicine if he refused to pay. When Rauf arrived to collect the money, enraged locals attacked him.
Locals from Mallikpara revealed that Rauf has a history of such fraudulent activities. Previously, he posed as a fake doctor and was beaten by a mob for attempting extortion. A mobile court later sentenced him to prison for fraud.
Gangni Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bani Israel confirmed that a case against Rauf is being processed. The army handed over the fake journalist to the police.
