Russia Declares State of Emergency in Tsunami-Hit Kuril Islands

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami waves that impacted the northern Kuril Islands. Russia has declared a state of emergency in the tsunami-affected Kuril Islands, particularly in the Severo-Kurilsk district, due to significant damage to infrastructure and widespread flooding.

According to Al Jazeera, the tsunami waves flooded the remote Russian port town of Severo-Kurilsk in the Sakhalin region, causing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. The Sakhalin government issued a statement, saying, “A state of emergency has been declared in the North Kuril District, where an earthquake and tsunami occurred today.”

The BBC reported that three tsunami waves have struck Severo-Kurilsk, with the third wave described as “extremely powerful” by Russia’s state news agency TASS. This wave caused significant damage to the port’s infrastructure and swept several anchored ships toward the strait. Floodwaters inundated parts of the town, prompting residents to seek safety on a nearby hill. Severo-Kurilsk, home to approximately 2,000 people, will remain evacuated until the tsunami threat subsides, according to TASS. The earthquake also caused damage in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, including the collapse of a kindergarten building, though no serious injuries have been reported
