Ferry Disaster in Bali: Vessel with 65 Passengers Sinks, 4 Bodies Recovered

A ferry named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, carrying 65 passengers, sank in rough seas near Bali, Indonesia. Rescue teams worked through the night to locate 38 missing individuals. According to AFP, at least four bodies have been recovered so far.

Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency stated that the ferry sank about half an hour after departing from Ketapang Port in East Java on Wednesday evening. The vessel was en route to Gilimanuk Port in Bali, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) away. The ferry was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks. Rama Samtama Putra, police chief of Banyuwangi in East Java, told AFP that four bodies have been recovered, while 23 people were rescued alive. Many survivors, who floated in turbulent waters for hours, lost consciousness. Rescue operations, involving nine boats, continued overnight despite challenging conditions, including dense darkness and waves up to 6.5 feet high.
