Trump Threatens 30-35% Tariffs on Japanese Goods if Trade Deal Fails

US President Donald Trump has warned that he may impose tariffs of 30 to 35 percent on Japanese goods if no trade agreement is reached with Japan. A final decision on the matter could be made next week.

Previously, on April 2, during the celebration of "Liberation Day," Trump imposed a 24 percent tariff on Japanese products. Subsequently, tariffs on goods from several countries were reduced to 10 percent for a 90-day period to allow negotiations with the US. This 90-day period is set to end on July 9.

Speaking at a press conference aboard Air Force One, Trump said, "Negotiations with Japan are ongoing, but I’m not sure if we’ll reach an agreement. I have my doubts." Japan has not directly commented on the issue. However, Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kazuhiko Aoki stated, "We are aware of what President Trump has said, but we don’t comment on every issue." Currently, most Japanese goods exported to the US face a 10 percent tariff. Vehicles and auto parts are subject to a 25 percent tariff, while steel and aluminum face tariffs as high as 50 percent. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi has emphasized that Japan will not make concessions in trade talks that would harm Japanese farmers.
Trump has previously announced his intention to secure 90 trade deals within 90 days. So far, only the United Kingdom has finalized a trade agreement with the US.
