Four Arrested in Cumilla’s Burichang for Murder of Expatriate’s Wife Over Land Dispute

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the murder of Ferdousi Begum, the wife of a Saudi Arabia expatriate, Shamsul Haque Alam, in Burichang Upazila, Cumilla. The murder, stemming from a long-standing land dispute, involved a planned contract killing for Tk 2 lakh, with the victim's body disposed of in a septic tank.

According to Mohammad Azizul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Burichang Police Station, the arrested individuals confessed to their involvement in the murder during court proceedings. The prime orchestrator, Nurjahan Begum, the sister-in-law of the victim, hired three contract killers—Anowar Hossain, Rubel Ahmed Mintu, and Mohammad Mainuddin Jillu—to execute the crime. The four accused gave confessional statements in court on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

The OC revealed that a prolonged dispute over land adjacent to their homes led Nurjahan Begum to plan the murder of Ferdousi Begum. She struck a deal with Anowar Hossain for Tk 2 lakh, with Rubel and Jillu joining in the execution of the crime. On June 27, 2025, Ferdousi Begum was killed in a secluded garden, and her body was stuffed in a sack and dumped in a septic tank of a nearby house. After she went missing, her family filed a General Diary (GD) with the police, and a search ensued. On July 1, 2025, locals spotted the body in the septic tank, approximately 200 yards from the victim's home, and informed the police, who recovered the body. Ferdousi’s son, Ikramul Hasan, filed a murder case with Burichang Police Station. Based on the case, police detained Nurjahan Begum, whose confession led to the arrest of the three hired killers. Police recovered the victim’s earrings and necklace from the suspects.
On July 2, 2025, the four accused were produced in court, and the three hired killers were sent to Cumilla Central Jail as per court orders.
