Five Arrested in Rangpur Over Attack on Hindu Homes

Rangpur, July 30, 2025 – Five individuals have been arrested in connection with an attack on Hindu homes in Rangpur’s Gangachara Upazila, triggered by allegations of religious defamation. The arrests were confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Headquarters on Wednesday.

According to the statement, a mob of unidentified individuals vandalized and looted homes in the Hindu-majority Balapara area of Aldadpur village, Betgari Union, Gangachara Upazila, and attacked police personnel. A case was filed by Shri Rabindranath Roy (55) against 1,000–1,200 unidentified persons. Five suspects have been apprehended following a joint operation.

The incident stems from allegations of derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) posted on social media, which sparked outrage. On Saturday, an attack took place in Aldadpur village. Local residents reported that on Sunday afternoon around 3:30 PM, an agitated mob began attacking Hindu homes. When police attempted to intervene, several houses were vandalized, and one police constable was seriously injured and admitted to a hospital. According to the Gangachara Upazila administration, 15 homes were vandalized and looted during the incident.
