Four Students Arrested in Secretariat Vandalism Case Sent to Jail

Following the late-night announcement of the postponement of the HSC and equivalent examinations, students stormed the main gate of the Secretariat, demanding the resignation of the Education Adviser and the Education Secretary. During the incident, law enforcement personnel baton-charged the students. The event took place around 3:45 PM yesterday.

A court has ordered the imprisonment of four individuals arrested in connection with a case filed over the student protests, vandalism, and clashes inside and outside the Secretariat, which were sparked by demands including the resignation of the Education Adviser. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court issued this order on Thursday following a police application.

The four individuals sent to jail are Ashikur Rahman Tanvir (19), Jefri Abhishek Sikder (19), Abu Sufian (21), and Shakil Mia (19). Court-related sources stated that the four were produced before the court in a case filed at Shahbagh Police Station, with the police requesting their detention. The defense sought bail for the accused. After hearing both sides, the court ordered their imprisonment. In the bail application, it was stated that Abu Sufian is a student at Dhaka University, Ashikur has completed his HSC from Milestone College, and Jefri is a student at Jahangirnagar University. It was claimed that they were not involved in the attack or vandalism. However, no information was provided about Shakil’s educational institution. On Tuesday, students protested and vandalized property inside and outside the Secretariat, leading to clashes. The police filed a case on Wednesday night, naming 1,000 to 1,200 unidentified individuals as accused. Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur told Prothom Alo on Wednesday that the case includes charges of obstructing police duties, hindering government functions, vandalism at the Secretariat, and damaging government property. The unrest followed a tragic incident on Monday when an Air Force fighter jet crashed at Milestone School and College in the capital, killing 29 people, including students, and injuring over 150. The announcement to postpone Tuesday’s HSC exams was made around 3:00 AM on Monday, while students were asleep. This caused widespread confusion among examinees in the morning, sparking anger among students. On Tuesday, around 2:30 PM, students from various educational institutions in the capital gathered in front of the Secretariat, demanding the resignation of the Education Adviser and Secretary. After protesting and chanting slogans for over one and a half hours, the students broke open the main gate of the Secretariat and entered, vandalizing at least 20 vehicles. Police and army personnel chased the students out, using batons, sound grenades, and tear gas. The students, in response, threw bricks and stones at the Secretariat from outside. Later, the students took positions at GPO Intersection and High Court Intersection near the Secretariat. Police used tear gas and chased them to disperse the crowd. In retaliation, students threw bricks at the police. The clashes, which continued from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM, left at least 75 students injured, who were treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Several police and army personnel were also injured in the incident.
