Hamas Agrees to Join Gaza Ceasefire Talks, Seeks U.S. Guarantees

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, has signaled its willingness to participate in a new round of ceasefire negotiations for Gaza, responding positively to a U.S.-backed proposal. In a statement posted on Telegram, Hamas confirmed it has submitted a favorable response to mediators and is ready to discuss implementing the ceasefire.

A senior Palestinian official told the BBC that Hamas has broadly accepted the deal's framework but is requesting key amendments. A primary condition is a U.S. guarantee that Israel will not resume attacks if talks for a permanent end to the 20-month conflict fail. Hamas’ ally, Islamic Jihad, also supports the ceasefire talks but stressed the need for assurances of a lasting truce.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, during which both sides would work toward a permanent resolution. Trump urged Hamas to accept what he called a “final offer,” warning that rejecting it could worsen the situation. The proposed deal outlines a phased release of hostages, with Hamas expected to free 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Approximately 50 hostages remain in Gaza, with at least 20 believed to be alive.
The ceasefire plan also ensures immediate humanitarian aid access to Gaza, coordinated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
