Heavy Rainfall in Pakistan’s Punjab Kills 63 in 24 Hours

Torrential monsoon rains on Thursday triggered floods and building collapses in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, resulting in at least 63 deaths and nearly 300 injuries, according to provincial authorities. The majority of fatalities were caused by the collapse of poorly constructed building roofs. Since late June, the nationwide death toll from rain-related incidents has risen to 159.

In Punjab’s capital, Lahore, 15 people lost their lives, while nine deaths were reported in Faisalabad. Additional fatalities occurred in the agricultural towns of Okara, Sahiwal, and Pakpattan.

Due to a sudden surge in water levels in the Nullah Lai river flowing through Rawalpindi, authorities ordered the urgent evacuation of residents in low-lying areas. The Rawalpindi administration declared a public holiday on Thursday, closing all government and private institutions and urging residents to stay indoors.

According to the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), since late June, monsoon rains have claimed 103 lives and injured 393 people in Punjab alone. Over 120 houses have been damaged, and six livestock have perished.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported a nationwide death toll of at least 159 since June 25, with over 1,000 homes damaged.
