In Matlab South Upazila, Chandpur, a housewife named Rupali Begum (40) was allegedly stabbed to death due to a family dispute. The incident occurred around midnight on Friday in Ghoradhari village, Upadi South Union. Police recovered her body from a septic tank at the house that same night. The victim’s husband, Jamal Mia, has been absconding since the incident.
Rupali Begum, daughter of Kalu Patowari, was married to Jamal Mia, whose hometown is in Barisal. Jamal was Rupali’s second husband, as her first husband passed away several years ago. She lived in her ancestral home in Ghoradhari village with her two sons and three daughters.
According to family and local sources, Rupali met Jamal through TikTok last year, and they later married. Jamal had four wives, with Rupali being his second. The couple frequently quarreled since their marriage. About 15 days ago, Jamal forcibly took Rupali’s gold ornaments and fled to Narayanganj. In response, Rupali filed a case against him in a Chandpur court, which escalated their conflict. Family sources also revealed that Jamal had repeatedly threatened to kill Rupali.
Rupali’s elder brother, Alim Uddin, said, “Jamal planned and killed my sister, then fled with her gold ornaments. I demand exemplary punishment for him.”
Locals reported that around midnight on Friday, a heated argument broke out between Rupali and Jamal at their ancestral home while other family members were asleep. During the altercation, Jamal allegedly stabbed Rupali in the chest and back. He then dumped her body in the septic tank and fled, taking gold ornaments worth approximately Tk2.2 million and a mobile phone.
When family members couldn’t find Rupali shortly after, they began searching and eventually discovered her body in the septic tank. Police were informed, and they recovered the body that night.
Matlab South Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Saleh Ahmad said, “A post-mortem report has been prepared, and the body has been sent to Chandpur General Hospital’s morgue for autopsy. This was a planned murder stemming from personal and family disputes. Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused. A murder case is in the process of being filed.”
