If Not Banned, Awami League Will Return as Jatiya Party: Gono Odhikar Parishad*

Rashed Khan, General Secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, stated that if the Jatiya Party is not banned and elections are held, the Awami League will return in the guise of the Jatiya Party. He further emphasized that neither the Awami League nor its affiliates will be allowed to participate in the upcoming elections. Khan made these remarks to journalists after submitting the party’s income-expenditure statement at the Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Monday.

Khan noted that there is public confusion regarding whether Awami League leaders can contest elections independently. He said the Chief Election Commissioner, AMM Nasir Uddin, assured them that no one holding a position in the Awami League would be allowed to participate, even as independent candidates. However, Gono Odhikar Parishad sought clarification from the Chief Election Commissioner about whether individuals who were MPs in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections, are not in any Awami League position but contributed to establishing a fascist system, would be eligible to contest in the upcoming election.

Khan added that the Chief Election Commissioner assured them that the matter would be considered seriously. He also mentioned that they raised concerns with the CEC about why the Jatiya Party and the 14-Party alliance, which were key collaborators in establishing the fascist system, have not had their registrations suspended like the Awami League’s. According to the income-expenditure statement submitted by Gono Odhikar Parishad, the party’s income last year was BDT 4,609,300, while its expenditure was BDT 4,596,088.
The delegation accompanying Rashed Khan to submit the financial statement included Abu Hanif, a senior council member and media coordinator of Gono Odhikar Parishad, and Mahbub Joni, another senior council member.
