According to Shahjahan, he was waiting for a vehicle at the Mawna intersection to travel to Dhaka for an examination scheduled for Sunday morning, followed by a planned overseas trip that night. A private car picking up passengers for Dhaka stopped near him, and after seeing others board, he assumed it was safe and got in. Minutes later, four individuals in the car held him hostage at gunpoint, taking his cash, smartphone, and debit/credit cards from four banks. Forcing him to reveal the PINs, the miscreants withdrew Tk 6 lakh from various ATMs in the area and also took Tk 50,000 in cash. After holding him for seven hours and assaulting him, they abandoned him near the National Feed Mill in the Memberbari area and fled.
Shahjahan shared the ordeal in a video posted on his Facebook account using another person’s smartphone, with help from locals who assisted him in contacting his family. He informed the Sreepur police before heading to Dhaka.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abdul Barik told Prothom Alo, “We are aware of the incident. Although it occurred in the Joydebpur police station area, since the victim boarded the vehicle from Sreepur, we have taken the initiative to investigate the matter.”
