Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen’s Party (NCP), has announced plans to return to Gopalganj, stating that the party will hold programs in every upazila and village of the district if they remain alive. In a verified Facebook post on Thursday (July 17, 2025), he declared, “The flag of the July Mass Uprising will fly in every household in Gopalganj. Gopalganj will not belong to Mujibists; it will belong to Bangladesh patriots.”
In his post, Nahid Islam accused the Awami League of creating a reign of terror in Gopalganj for decades, tarnishing the spirit of the Liberation War, and committing injustices against followers of the Sanatan religion. “We are determined to change this situation,” he asserted. He emphasized that their programs were intended to be peaceful, but armed attacks were launched against them by “Mujibist terrorists” with the intent to kill, reminiscent of the violence during the July Mass Uprising.
Nahid criticized attempts to rehabilitate a “refined Awami League” after August 5, calling the party a terrorist organization rather than a political entity. He demanded justice for the July mass killings through legal and judicial processes, lamenting that members of Chhatra League and Awami League have not been widely arrested, and those detained often secure bail or escape from custody.
Addressing security concerns, Nahid alleged that corrupt officials and supporters of fascism remain embedded in various levels of the administration, easily swayed by money. He claimed that Chhatra League activists from across Bangladesh were present in Gopalganj during the incident, and despite security clearances, their movements were restricted. Buses carrying NCP supporters were stopped, preventing many from joining the peaceful rally. Despite these obstacles, Nahid said they completed a road meeting peacefully, only to face an armed attack by Awami League supporters while leaving.
Commenting on reports of four deaths during the incident, Nahid stated, “We do not support or expect any extrajudicial killings. Terrorists must face justice through legal processes.” He called for a thorough investigation into the incident and the arrest of the perpetrators, not only in Gopalganj but across the country. He held the government and administration responsible for failing to take timely action to prevent the situation.
Reaffirming their commitment, Nahid declared, “We kept our promise to go to Gopalganj, and we swear by the blood of our martyrs that we will not allow Mujibism to stand in Gopalganj or anywhere in Bangladesh. We will return to Gopalganj and hold programs in every upazila and village. The Gopalganj of martyrs Babu Molla and Rathin Biswas will be reclaimed. Not an inch of Bangladesh’s soil will belong to Mujibists, Inshallah.” He expressed gratitude to those who protested the attack and took to the streets in solidarity.
