NCP Central Leaders Trapped in Gopalganj Circuit House After Attack

In Gopalganj, an attack was launched on the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) march following their rally, leaving central leaders trapped in the Gopalganj Circuit House. The assault was allegedly carried out by members of the Awami League, Jubo League, and the banned organization Chhatra League.

The incident occurred around 3:30 PM on Wednesday (July 16). Law enforcement agencies are currently attempting to bring the situation under control in the area. NCP’s Chief Coordinator, Nasiruddin Patowari, told journalists, “As we were leaving, people from the Awami League and Jubo League, along with others from across the country, attacked us. We are now confined in one place. The administration had assured us that the situation was under control, but the police, administration, and army have remained completely inactive.” Earlier, an attack and cocktail explosions took place at the NCP rally venue. NCP leaders and activists present at the scene blamed the banned Chhatra League for the attack, alleging that they vandalized sound systems, microphones, and chairs at the stage. The attack on the rally occurred around 1:30 PM on Wednesday (July 16) at the Pouro Park area in Gopalganj town. Gopalganj Sadar Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Md. Sajedur Rahman confirmed the incident. Earlier in the day, amid tensions surrounding the NCP’s “March to Gopalganj” program, an attack was carried out on the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s (UNO) motorcade, and a police vehicle was vandalized and set on fire. Three police personnel were injured in the incident. The army is working to control the situation. In response to the vandalism and attacks on police during the NCP’s July march in various parts of Gopalganj, the army has detained seven individuals so far, though their identities have not been immediately disclosed. To manage the situation, the army has deployed Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) on the Gopalganj-Kotalipara road, Gopalganj-Tekerhat road, and in Tungipara. Gopalganj Sadar Thana OC Mir Md. Sajedur Rahman stated that attacks on police and vandalism of vehicles occurred in connection with the NCP’s month-long July march program. As part of the NCP’s month-long central program, “July March to Build the Nation,” a rally was organized in Gopalganj today, named the “March to Gopalganj.
