NCP Convener Nahid Expresses Doubts Over ‘July Charter

On Monday morning, during a conversation with journalists at Jamalpur Circuit House, Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), expressed significant doubts about the signing of the ‘July Charter’ if a consensus on the Proportional Representation (PR) system is not reached.

On Sunday, after concluding a foot march in Sherpur, NCP leaders visited Jamalpur. On Monday morning, they met with the families of martyrs of the July movement at the Jamalpur Circuit House auditorium. Responding to journalists’ questions after the meeting, the NCP chief voiced his concerns.

He further stated that following the PR system based on vote share is crucial for forming an upper chamber, which is vital for empowerment and accountability. He emphasized that failure to reach a consensus on this issue could make the signing of the ‘July Charter’ uncertain.

Nahid expressed hope that the ‘July Charter’ would be finalized by August 5 through a consensus among all parties. He also raised questions about the neutrality of the administration and stated that discussions on elections would only take place after the ‘July Charter’ is finalized. He stressed the importance of creating a ‘level playing field’ before the elections.

Notably, a foot march organized by the NCP began from Tamaltala Mor in Jamalpur city on Monday afternoon. NCP central leaders delivered speeches at a rally in the Faujdari area. After concluding their programs in Jamalpur, the leaders are scheduled to head to Mymensingh.

On Sunday evening, upon arriving in Jamalpur city, the leaders visited the Al Jamiatul Habibia Qawmi Madrasa, the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jamal (R.), and the Dayamayi Temple. They spent the night at the Jamalpur Circuit House and various residential hotels.

Besides Nahid Islam, the meeting was addressed by Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Senior Joint Convener Samantha Sharmin, Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Zara, Nahida Sarwar, Chief Organizer (South Zone) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (North Zone) Sarjis Alam, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Senior Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan, Joint Member Secretary Lutfur Rahman, Member Mashiur Amin, National Youth Force Convener Tarikul Islam, Joint Convener Hifzur Rahman, and Organizer Mosaddekur Rahman, among others.

The rally was presided over by NCP’s Central Joint Member Secretary and Jamalpur District Chief Coordinator Lutfur Rahman.
