PBI Arrests Suspect in Mymensingh Robbery Case After Two Years

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a suspect involved in a robbery case from two years ago in Mymensingh city’s Choto Bazar area, where a businessman was robbed of Tk 4 lakh in a cunning manner.

The arrested individual, Md. Hannan (62), son of the late Ali Miah from Dhaka’s Chakbazar area, was apprehended on Tuesday night in Chakbazar. On Wednesday evening, he confessed to the crime in a Mymensingh court. A press release from PBI’s Mymensingh office confirmed these details on Wednesday night. According to PBI sources, on November 9, 2022, businessman Shamsul Alam withdrew money from Pubali Bank in Choto Bazar, Mymensingh, and completed a transaction at Janata Bank. As he reached the front of Lima Printing Press, a group of unidentified individuals distracted him by throwing dirt on his clothes, claiming it was an accident. While he was cleaning his clothes, the gang stole his bag containing the money and fled. A case was filed at Kotwali Police Station regarding the incident. After the initial police investigation, a final report was submitted to the court. Following the court’s directive, PBI took over the investigation. Using information technology and artificial intelligence (AI), PBI analyzed CCTV footage to identify and arrest the suspect. PBI Superintendent Rokibul Akter stated, “The incident occurred in a crowded area, making it challenging to identify the real culprit from CCTV footage. After nearly two years of analyzing footage and leveraging technological support, we identified and arrested Hannan. He is an active member of an inter-district robbery gang, accused of using similar tactics to rob people by throwing dirt on them in various districts. Multiple cases are pending against him.”
