A 22-year-old worker named Rumman Ahmed died after a boarding bridge wheel exploded at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Rumman succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at around 4:15 PM.
Rumman Ahmed, a resident of Kandipara village in the Airport Police Station area of Sylhet, was working on maintenance tasks alongside another worker, Enamul (25), from Mahaladi village in the same area. Both were employees of a contractor responsible for maintenance at the airport. Enamul was also injured in the incident.
According to airport authorities and police, boarding bridges, used as stairs for passengers boarding international flights, are equipped with wheels for mobility. These bridges undergo regular maintenance during breaks in flight operations. On Thursday afternoon, the two workers were replacing wheels on a boarding bridge when one of them exploded with a loud noise, injuring both. They were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, Rumman was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital, where he passed away.
Hafiz Ahmed, Director of Osmani International Airport, stated, “While replacing a wheel on the boarding bridge, it exploded, injuring two workers nearby. Unfortunately, one of them died during treatment. Whether it was negligence or an accident, this is a tragic incident.”
Syed Anisur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Sylhet Airport Police Station, told Prothom Alo, “The wheel of the boarding bridge exploded with a loud sound while being removed inside the airport premises. One worker died, and another is receiving treatment. The deceased’s body will be handed over to the family after completing legal procedures.”
