On Thursday night (July 24), the rescued fishermen were brought to Surjomukhi Ghat in Hatiya Upazila.
According to the Coast Guard, the trawler, named FB Jamila, set out for fishing from Chittagong’s Fishery Ghat on July 19. The next day, the trawler’s engine failed, and due to the lack of mobile network coverage, the fishermen were unable to contact the shore. Drifting at sea, they finally got a network signal on Thursday and called 999 for help. Following instructions from 999, the Hatiya Coast Guard conducted a search and located the trawler near Ganguriya Char, east of Hatiya, and successfully rescued it.
One of the 14 crew members on the trawler fell ill and was provided medical treatment. The trawler was then towed to Surjomukhi Ghat in Hatiya.
Sumon, one of the fishermen, said, “Our trawler’s engine broke down, and we were adrift at sea for four days. Without a network, we couldn’t contact anyone. On Thursday, when we finally got a signal, we called 999, and the Coast Guard rescued us.”
He added, “The weather turned very rough today. If the Coast Guard hadn’t rescued us, none of us might have survived. We are grateful to them for saving our lives.”
Coast Guard Media Officer Lt. Commander Siam Ul Haque said, “The Coast Guard is always ready to assist fishermen in distress along the coastal areas. Additionally, our personnel continuously conduct operations to curb any kind of crime, and these efforts will continue.”
