Robots are doing it all. From serving drinks and playing games to arranging books and even engaging in boxing matches, robots showcased their capabilities at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held in Shanghai, China. The event highlighted China's advancements in AI technology.

The conference, which began on Saturday and will continue until Monday, July 28, 2025, saw Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasize the need for a safe AI framework. During the opening ceremony, he announced the establishment of a new organization to create regulations and guidelines to ensure safe AI usage. He also cautioned that the risks associated with AI development must be considered.

According to the organizers, over 800 companies participated in the conference, showcasing more than 3,000 products. At one exhibitor’s stall, a robot was seen playing drums, while others demonstrated advanced skills.

Hangzhou-based company Unitree announced the launch of a humanoid robot named ‘R-1,’ priced at $6,000. Meanwhile, tech giant Baidu revealed advancements in its “Digital Human” technology, incorporating next-generation AI frameworks that mimic human thinking, decision-making, and task assistance.
In an interview with AFP, Baidu’s senior executive Wu Chenxia addressed concerns about AI’s impact on jobs. He stated, “AI is like a tool. It can improve the quality of work and save time. However, human assistance is still essential for AI operations.”
