At least 10 workers were injured when the roof of an under-construction building collapsed at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Trishal, Mymensingh. The incident occurred around 4:15 PM on Thursday, July 31, 2025. The injured workers were rescued and taken to Trishal Upazila Health Complex. The university administration has decided to form a five-member committee to investigate the incident.
According to university sources, a 10-story dormitory is being constructed near the “Bidrohi” student hostel. The workers were casting the roof of a ground-floor veranda when the entire structure collapsed with a loud noise around 4:15 PM. The injured workers were promptly rescued and sent to Trishal Upazila Health Complex, with one critically injured worker transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Dr. S.M. Ziaul Bari, Trishal Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that 10 workers were brought to the health complex in injured condition. One was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, while the others received primary care.
Students at the university noted that intermittent rain had been falling throughout the day. They alleged that the supporting pillars used for the roof casting were weak, with bamboo and jute ropes used instead of iron pipes in several places, potentially contributing to the collapse due to the frail structure.
The university’s Proctor, Mahbubur Rahman, said the collapse occurred during the casting of a veranda roof on the ground floor of the 10-story building. The construction was being carried out by a contractor named CSI. Several workers were injured in the incident.
Efforts to contact the contracting firm for a statement were unsuccessful.
The university’s Registrar, Md. Mizanur Rahman, stated that a five-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident. The committee will examine the cause of the collapse and whether negligence was involved. Necessary actions will be taken based on the findings.
