Saudi Arabia: No Normalization with Israel Without Palestinian Statehood

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, stated on Monday (July 28) that Saudi Arabia will not normalize relations with Israel until a Palestinian state is established and the conflict in Gaza ends. Speaking at a joint press conference with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in New York, following a high-level international conference on the two-state solution co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, Prince Faisal emphasized Riyadh’s firm stance on the issue.

When asked whether Saudi Arabia would recognize Israel under the Abraham Accords in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state, Prince Faisal said, “For Saudi Arabia, recognizing Israel is deeply tied to the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

He further noted, “We certainly hope that the clear consensus we’ve seen today, which will continue in the future, and the clear momentum toward establishing a Palestinian state, will facilitate the start of normalization discussions.”

Prince Faisal stressed that no discussions on normalization with Israel could take place while the “massacres” in Gaza continue. He stated that talks could only begin once the conflict in Gaza ends and the suffering of the Palestinian people is alleviated.

“People are dying every day in Gaza, suffering, and everything is being destroyed. In such a situation, there is no reason or credibility to talk about normalization,” he said.

He added, “After this, we must address the establishment of a Palestinian state. Once that is achieved, we can clearly discuss normalization.”
