On Tuesday, July 1, during the first day of BNP’s programs marking the first anniversary of the uprising, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman expressed concerns about demands for proportional representation in elections raised by some political parties. He noted that while this system is practiced in some countries, its suitability for Bangladesh’s current context needs careful consideration. He cautioned that it could be a ploy to restore authoritarianism and might create division instead of fostering unity.

In his speech, Tarique emphasized the urgency of establishing a government accountable to the people and building a justice-based society to honor the sacrifices of martyrs. He stressed that unnecessary debates or controversies should not waste time. He drew parallels between the freedom fighters of 1971 and the heroes of 2024 who fought for Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty, assuring that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. He announced that if BNP comes to power, various roads and structures would be named after these martyrs to commemorate their contributions.
