A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment in the murder case of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella. Four others have been acquitted.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Sheikh Samidul Islam, the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka. This was confirmed to *Prothom Alo* by the court’s Additional Public Prosecutor (APP), Abul Kalam Azad.
The three convicted individuals are Tamjid Ahmed alias Rubel, Rasel Chowdhury alias Chakki Rasel, and Minhajul Arefin alias Bhagne Rasel. Following the verdict, the court ordered their transfer to prison.
The four acquitted individuals are BNP leader MA Kaiyum, his brother MA Matin, Shakhawat Hossain, and Sohel alias Bhangari Sohel.
Fakhrul Islam, the lawyer for Kaiyum and Matin, told *Prothom Alo* that his clients were falsely implicated for political harassment but have received justice through their acquittal.
On the evening of September 28, 2015, Cesare Tavella (51) was shot dead on a footpath at Road No. 90 in Gulshan 2, Dhaka. In connection with this murder, the police filed a charge sheet against seven accused on June 22, 2016. The charge sheet stated that a vested interest group, with malicious intent, had pre-planned and executed the killing of the Italian citizen.
