Trump Announces 25% Tariff on Indian Imports

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India, effective from August 1, 2025. The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. Trump also stated that India will face an "unspecified" penalty starting August 1, though he provided no details on the nature or reason for the penalty.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump elaborated, "While India is our friend, we have done relatively less business with them in recent years because their tariffs are very high, among the highest in the world. They use the most stringent and frustrating non-tariff barriers compared to any other country."

He further criticized India, saying, "They always purchase a significant portion of military equipment from Russia. While everyone wants Russia to stop the killings in Ukraine, India, like China, remains one of the largest buyers of Russian fuel at a time when these are not good signs!" India’s Ministry of Commerce, which leads trade negotiations with the U.S., was contacted for an immediate response but did not provide any comment.
