The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Md. Babu Khan, alias Tunda Babu (31), a key associate of the notorious ‘Kobzikata Group’ and leader of a juvenile gang in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area. He was apprehended on Wednesday from Kashiani in Gopalganj. The arrest was announced during a press conference held on Thursday at RAB’s media center in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.
According to RAB, Tunda Babu was involved in various criminal activities, including robbery, extortion, and land grabbing, leading a juvenile gang in Mohammadpur. RAB-2 Director Md. Khalidul Haque Hawladar stated that during initial interrogation, Babu admitted to being a key aide of Mohammadpur’s top criminal, Anwar, alias Kobzikata Anwar. Under Anwar’s instructions, he carried out extortion, drug trafficking, land grabbing, theft, robbery, and even murder in Mohammadpur and surrounding areas. The gang operated in small groups during the day, targeting passersby in less crowded areas to rob money, mobile phones, laptops, and bags. At night, they broke into homes and apartments, committing armed robberies. They were also involved in drug trafficking in various areas. RAB reported that on 18 February, Tunda Babu was seen brandishing sharp weapons in both hands alongside juvenile gang members in Shyamoli Housing’s Project No. 2, an incident captured in CCTV footage that went viral on social media. He was arrested on 24 February but was released on bail on 5 May, after which he resumed his criminal activities. Tunda Babu faces over 10 cases in various police stations in the capital for charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery, theft, and dacoity. Recently, RAB-2 operations led to the arrest of Kobzikata Group’s leader Md. Anwar, alias Shooter Anwar, Chua Selim Group’s leader Md. Selim Ashrafi, alias Chua Selim or Chora Selim, and drug trafficker Bhuiya Sohel, alias Bunia Sohel, along with their associates.
