Viral Threat Video by Gaibandha Murder Case Accused Kanchan Sparks Outrage

A chilling video of Kanchan, the prime accused in the high-profile murder case of Ashiqur Rahman Rocky, has gone viral on social media, causing widespread concern in Gaibandha. In the 47-second video, Kanchan is heard saying, “I am Kanchan from Purbopara. I have committed one murder, and I will commit 100 more.” The video was posted on Wednesday night (July 2) from a Facebook account named “Shaon Zaman” and came to the attention of reporters on Thursday afternoon (July 3).

The video was shared by a lawyer claiming to be associated with the High Court Division, who alleged that Kanchan has repeatedly threatened and attacked his family. In the Facebook post, the lawyer claimed that Kanchan, son of Nawab Ali from Purbopara, is a drug trafficker and the prime accused in the murder of Ashiqur Rahman Rocky, the general secretary of Fulchhari Upazila Chhatra League, on July 11, 2021. Kanchan is currently out on bail.

According to the lawyer’s post, Kanchan has attacked his home multiple times with weapons and recently demolished the boundary wall of their residence in Purbopara while issuing death threats. Despite repeated complaints to the police, no effective action has been taken. A General Diary (GD) filed on Wednesday night was recorded as a complaint. In his post, the lawyer questioned, “Is this the new Bangladesh where a murder case accused terrorizes a lawyer’s family while the administration remains silent?” He also sought public support for the safety of his family. Gaibandha Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinur Islam confirmed that a case was filed on Wednesday night regarding the boundary wall vandalism and threats. “Operations to arrest the accused are ongoing,” he said. Gaibandha Police Superintendent Nishat Angela stated, “I haven’t seen the video yet. The matter will be investigated. If the allegations against the police are found to be true, action will be taken against the responsible officers.”
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two members of the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA), including a military commander, were killed during a special operation by the army in a remote hilly area of Ruma Upazila, Bandarban. The operation, led by Ruma Army Zone Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Alamgir, took place on Thursday morning (July 3). The killed KNA members were allegedly involved in planning bank robberies and attacks on security forces in Ruma and Thanchi Upazilas last year. Weapons and ammunition were recovered during the operation.
