Wife and Two Others Sentenced to Death for Husband’s Murder Over Extramarital Affair

In a case stemming from an extramarital affair, a court in Chattogram has sentenced three individuals, including the wife of the victim, to death for the murder of her husband. On Monday (July 14), Additional District and Sessions Judge HM Shafiqul Islam of Chattogram delivered the verdict.

The convicted individuals are Rima Akter, Shahadat Hossain Kaiyum, and Abdul Kaiyum. They were present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict and were subsequently sent to prison with the warrant.

According to court sources, on the night of April 9, 2021, Joynal Abedin (also known as Kala Miya), a fruit trader from Chattogram’s Halishahar area, was killed in Telipara, Barabkunda, under Sitakunda Upazila. Rima Akter, the victim’s wife, with the assistance of her lover Shahadat Hossain Kaiyum, murdered Joynal Abedin due to an extramarital affair. They disposed of the body in a pond. The following morning, police recovered the body from the pond, and a murder case was filed at Sitakunda Police Station. After their arrest, Rima Akter and Shahadat Hossain Kaiyum gave confessional statements in court. Following the investigation, Sitakunda Police submitted a charge sheet against the accused on October 26, 2021.

Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Afsar Uddin Helal of Chattogram District and Sessions Judge Court stated that 11 witnesses testified during the trial. As the crime was proven against the accused, the court sentenced them to death.
