122 Fishermen Detained for Illegal Fishing in Myanmar Waters

The Bangladesh Coast Guard detained 122 fishermen and seized 19 fishing boats for illegally fishing in Myanmar’s territorial waters. The operation took place on Friday (August 29) around noon, as confirmed by Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque.

Siam-ul-Haque stated that, based on confidential information, it was learned that several Bangladeshi fishing boats from the Shahporir Dwip area under Sabrang Union in Teknaf had crossed the zero line of the Bangladesh-Myanmar maritime boundary to fish in Myanmar’s waters.

He added that, acting on this information, the BCG Outpost Shahpori conducted a special operation on Friday in the Myanmar border area, covering the Naf River estuary from Jaliyapara to the region near Naikhyangdia, adjacent to Shahporir Dwip’s Border Pillar-3. During the operation, 19 Bangladeshi fishing boats, along with 122 fishermen (29 Bangladeshis and 93 Rohingya), were detained for illegally crossing the zero line into Myanmar’s waters.
He further noted that such operations will continue to ensure the safety of fishermen. Despite the existing ban, there has been a significant increase in Bangladeshi fishing boats crossing the Bangladesh-Myanmar zero line to fish in Myanmar’s territory in recent days. As a result, the Arakan Army has been detaining Bangladeshi fishermen and their boats almost daily. Legal proceedings against the detained fishermen and seized boats are underway
