70 Trucks Seized in Sylhet, 35,000 Cubic Feet of Stones Recovered

In a major crackdown on illegal stone extraction and smuggling at the Sadapather tourist spot in Companiganj, Sylhet, the administration conducted a large-scale operation from Wednesday night to Thursday (August 14) afternoon.

During the operation, approximately 130 vehicles were inspected, and about 35,000 cubic feet of stones were recovered from around 70 trucks. The process of returning these stones to the river is underway. Sylhet’s Additional District Magistrate Farzana Akter Mita confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post.

A source from the district administration revealed that a significant portion of the recovered stones is being returned to the Dholai River to restore its natural flow and protect the environment. Simultaneously, law enforcement agencies are actively working to arrest several influential figures involved in the stone looting by Thursday night. Local residents have alleged that a powerful syndicate has been illegally extracting and smuggling stones from the Sadapather area for a long time. Recently, the scale of this looting has escalated to such an extent that the natural beauty and biodiversity along the Dholai River’s banks are under severe threat. The administration has stated that the operation will continue until all illegally extracted stones are recovered and those involved are brought to justice. Sylhet’s Additional District Magistrate Farzana Akter Mita said, “This operation will continue to protect natural resources and the environment. No one involved in illegal stone extraction, stockpiling, or smuggling will be spared. Since last night, about 130 vehicles have been searched at checkpoints. Stones from the Sadapather area were identified in around 70 vehicles, and a decision has been made to return them to their original place.”
