Arson and Looting at Deceased BNP Leader’s House in Barishal

Miscreants looted and set fire to the residence of the late BNP leader ATM Motiur Rahman in Mehendiganj, Barishal. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday (August 16) in Ward No. 9 of Biddanandpur Union, Upazila.

Local sources reported that after the death of ATM Motiur Rahman, former chairman of Biddanandpur Union and ex-president of the union’s BNP unit, his children relocated to Barishal city and abroad. The village house had remained locked for a long time. On Friday night, miscreants broke into the house, vandalized and looted furniture, and subsequently set it ablaze, completely burning down the residence.

Aklima Begum, a resident of the same house, said she woke up around 4:30 a.m. for Fajr prayers and noticed flames engulfing the chairman’s house. She raised an alarm, and locals managed to control the fire, but by then, everything inside had been reduced to ashes. Local resident Mosharraf Hossain noted that Motiur’s children visited the village only once or twice a year, and the house remained locked. The miscreants vandalized the property and set it on fire, causing it to burn down rapidly. Complainant Mostafa Kamal Uddin Harun stated that the attack and arson were likely linked to a land dispute with some locals in the village. He claimed the fire caused damages worth approximately half a crore taka. Kazirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mizanur Rahman said, “We have visited the site, and the affected family has filed a written complaint. Legal action will be taken following an investigation.”
