Bangladesh Army to Play Key Role in Democratic Journey After 16 Years

In a significant development, the Bangladesh Election Commission has decided to deploy the armed forces in the upcoming national election, marking their return to the electoral process after a 16-year hiatus. The announcement has sparked renewed hope among voters and created waves of anticipation in political circles.

Historically, the Bangladesh Army has been a symbol of trust during times of crisis, be it natural disasters or national emergencies. Their professionalism, discipline, and dedication have consistently earned the confidence of the people. This time, the army will take on the role of ensuring neutrality and security in the electoral process. According to the Election Commission, the deployment of the military will ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the populace.

Political analysts believe that the army’s presence will not only enhance security but also restore voters’ confidence. One analyst remarked, “The people of Bangladesh have immense faith in the army’s discipline and patriotism. Their presence in the field symbolizes trust and security.” The main opposition party, which has long demanded military deployment during elections, welcomed the decision. Opposition leader Begum Jesmin Tuli stated, “If the army is deployed with adequate authority, people will be able to vote without fear. With the military present, no one will dare to engage in irregularities.” The ruling party also expressed no objections, noting that the army’s involvement would eliminate fear and ensure a transparent electoral environment. Public reactions reflect similar trust in the armed forces. A teacher from the capital said, “In previous elections, I couldn’t vote even after going to the polling station. With the army present this time, I’m sure there will be no fear.” A garment worker added, “We always see chaos during elections on TV. With the army there, I’ll go to vote in peace.” Past experiences show that elections with direct military involvement—such as those in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2008—saw reduced violence and increased voter turnout. The army’s presence ensured discipline and fostered an environment of trust at polling stations. In contrast, the limited role of the military in the 2014 and 2018 elections led to various controversies. Thus, this decision is widely seen as a positive step toward strengthening democracy. The international community has also welcomed the move, with diplomatic circles viewing it as a step toward a credible election. However, they emphasized that the army should be granted effective authority to ensure their role is meaningful and not merely symbolic. Challenges remain, including electoral violence, questions over administrative neutrality, technological issues, and the influence of money and arms. Yet, there is widespread belief that the disciplined and patriotic armed forces will rise to the occasion and address these challenges effectively. The people of Bangladesh have always seen the army as a protector, not only guarding borders but also leading in times of crisis, from disaster relief to national emergencies. Their presence in the electoral field signifies renewed assurance and hope for the nation. The army’s return to election duties after 16 years is not just an administrative decision; it marks a new beginning for Bangladesh’s democracy. If the armed forces carry out their responsibilities with the same discipline, neutrality, and resolve as before, Bangladesh will prove that its military is the ultimate symbol of trust in safeguarding democracy.
