Speaking to the media, Bhairab Thana’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khandaker Fuhad Ruhani said, “Robberies are happening, but we are apprehending the culprits. The challenge is that robbers are not detained in jail for long, which undermines our efforts. Preventing robberies requires everyone’s cooperation.”
Azharul Islam, one of the organizers of the social movement against robberies in Bhairab, commented on the police’s response, saying, “If there’s a will, everything is possible.” Following the protest on Saturday afternoon, where residents accused the police of failing to curb robberies and presented saris and bangles as a symbolic challenge, the police were given a three-day ultimatum to make Bhairab robbery-free. According to police and locals, no robbery incidents were reported in Bhairab on Sunday, the first day of the ultimatum.
Local residents warned that they would surround the police station again if the desired results are not achieved. Bhairab Upazila Executive Officer Shobnom Sharmin addressed the issue, stating, “To prevent robberies, the municipality has brought Bhairab’s main roads under CCTV surveillance. All necessary measures will be taken to curb robberies.”
