Court Imposes Travel Ban on Rainbow Group Chairman and His Two Sons

A court has imposed a travel ban on Rafiqul Islam, Chairman of Rainbow Group, and his two sons, Kawsar Ahmed and Mehedi Hasan. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain on Monday following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC stated that it is investigating allegations against Rafiqul Islam and his sons for embezzling Tk 1,000 crore through fraudulent mortgages in favor of Silver Food Industries and laundering the funds abroad. Amid concerns that they might flee the country, the court issued the travel ban after a hearing.

Additionally, on August 8, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police filed a case at Gulshan Police Station against Rafiqul Islam and his associates for allegedly laundering Tk 878 crore. **Former DIG’s National ID Blocked** In a separate case, the court ordered the blocking of the national identity cards of former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Abdul Baten and his wife, Noor Jahan Akhtar. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain on Monday. The ACC informed the court that it is investigating allegations of bribery and corruption through which Abdul Baten and his family members amassed wealth beyond their known sources of income. Following a hearing, the court ordered the blocking of the national identity cards of Baten and his wife.
